330ml glass 7,5% ABV
Served chilled in a Cockpit tulip glass.
Appearance: Lightly hazed, golden-amber body; topped by a good sized, creamy, off white head. The retention and lacing are reasonable.
Smell: Hmmm, this is certainly not "very fresh" as our waitress claimed! The sweet malt body is clearly evident as well as some light tropical fruit notes and some sweet citrus (mostly orange, but also a touch of grapefruit).
Taste: Again, this beer certainly seems to be past its prime and also doesn't really seem to fit the double IPA category as the brewery claimed. Notes include: Sweet citrus, light tropical notes, a light leafy, herbal note and a fair amount of sweet honey/caramel malt.
The bitterness is moderate at best - either this is in fact VERY old or it was not a double IPA to begin with.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, lightly oily with a medium level of pleasant carbonation.
Overall: It really annoys me when a brewery serves a beer that is clearly not as fresh as it should be!
