Trapper Pie, our collaborative New Mexican Apple Pie Double IPA. Dreamt up with my long time friend @ryanmwm of Casita Cerveceria. This beer is a throwback to the much simpler days when we both lived in the Lehigh Valley (I was at @weyerbacher_brewing and Ryan was working for our distributor) and spent weekends hanging out, home brewing, getting spacey, listening to @jeezy, and baking pies (Seriously!). .
.
Trapper Pie was brewed with spelt, malted oats and lactose sugar. Conditioned atop heaps of fresh apple purée, Madagascar vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, ginger, and a nice and subtle amount of guajillo & ancho chile peppers. Dry hopped intensely with Simcoe, Equinox, and Hallertau Blanc. It all comes together with harmonious notes of bright tropical fruit, warm subtle spice, coconut, candied apple, and drippy mango jam.

Opaque tan-orange with a large white thick foam head.
Smell definitely starts strangely, with what seems like ham, then slowly transforms to grainy wheat pie crust with faint apples, pears and the oddly savory longan fruit, as well as a minor hint of horchata. There's also a touch of lime aroma spritzing it up in the background.
Flavor starts with apple laden rice pudding, but the old lady immediately states Tutti Frutti right up front. This is not something I'm familiar with, but hearing her describe it and looking it up, it's not far off. I also get a hint of Sweet Tarts with mint.
This has quite a tart tang, so it's apparent there's an abundance of hops fighting to keep this from being a confection, but it does have on underlying dessert quality, however odd, with a full body, a thick fizz and a semi-dry yet tingly finish.

L: crazy amount of haze here, with a good size white head and tons of lacing.
S: Apples overpower at first, then hops and a bit of cinnamon and chiles.
T: Wow this is great. Apples, hops, a bit of spice from the chiles and the tiniest hint of cinnamon.
F: Smooth, thick and sort of creamy. Works super well for the flavors here.
O: this is the first non Waldo's IPA in a while that made me say wow on the first sip. This is great and now I need to get more.

Everything is there - apples, cinnamon, vanilla. Lactose offers a little melted ice cream on the side. I have to work to get the ancho, but it is there with a hint of smoke. Very lightly hopped at the end.No hint of the alcohol. Gimmicky? Most definitely, but this one is tasty and fun.
If you are an IPA purist, don't bother. However, if you want to have a brew that is pushing the envelop in oddness, yet still delivering something with a pretty interesting flavor combo, pick up a can or two. Props to Tired Hands for continuing to execute odd combos in a very drinkable and pleasant manner.
