Big Scorpion Stinger Double IPA is our hop-jammed DIPA. Brewed with 2-row, flaked and malted oats and hopped with hand-selected Columbus and Mosaic before being STUNG in the dry-hop with Mosaic, Motueka and Nelson Sauvin. Notes of agave nectar, pineapple gummies and fresh peach juice.

A - Opaque medium golden yellow pour with a thin, frothy layer of lacing resting on top that sticks to the sides of the glass.
S - Nose is all malt and oats with very faded citrus.
T - Taste definitely outpaces the nose with way more citrus presence (grapefruit and pineapple). Malt base is strong but over top is faded and resinous pineapple, citrus, and peppery citrus rind while ending balanced.
M - Big medium body that's soft and chewy and finishes wet on the palate.
O - Still decent but it's faded for sure. (Have no problem adjusting this review if and when I find fresher cans if they brew this again.)

This episode begins with the entire contents of a pint can being emptied into a clear glass liter mug. There's plenty of just-off-white foam produced by the action and it recedes rather quickly and unevenly. The liquid is apricot-amber in color, opaque and somewhat dull. It has the soft typical tropical fruit notes for the nose, unfortunately far to common in modern hazy American IPAs. A decade ago, this might have looked and smelled uniquely appealing. There's a resurrection with the taste, as the hopping is strongly and complexly bitter. This may look and smell like an overly oated hazy IPA, but the taste proves otherwise. The hops are sharply piney, then earthy and the finish even provides a citrusy bite. Remarkable, because the oats don't provide nearly the taste counterbalance that barley would. The ABV likely contributes to the bite, but one good thing about oats in the wort is their contributions to the mouthfeel. This bites, well maybe stings hard, but it glides across the tongue smoothly. There's some noticeable, but irregular glass lacing. This went from low expectations to an enthusiastic appreciation, within a few gulps.

Re-released in March 2024. A solid DIPA. Maybe a touch bitter on the finish, but very nice overall.

Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a very hazy orange with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves massive streaks of lace, with nice retention. 4.25
Aroma has massive white grapes, mandarin, peach, mange, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 4
Taste follows white grape, mandarin, peach, mango, apricot, and grapefruit. 4
Mouthfeel is above average, soft carbonation, maybe a tad dry, and not sure of the ABV but thinking 8.5% and enormous flavor. 4.25
Overall this one I am not loving, the Nelson seems a tad aggressive for my liking. Still worth a shot. 4
