Trendler Czech Dark Lager is the latest addition to our Trendler series of traditional lagers and ales. This beer is built on a base of Weyermann Pilsner and Munich malts, along with CaraAroma and Carafa malts to lend a roasty and complex character. Hopped sensibly with Perle and Kazbeck hops for a clean and restrained bitterness. Notes of biscuit dough, lightly toasted bread, and Tootsie Rolls. 5.2% ABV.

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's a very dark brown, almost black in color, beneath a full head of khaki colored foam. The aroma is surprisingly somewhat roasty, certainly toasy as well, and maybe a little like chocolate fudge. It reminds me of Russian black bread. On to the taste - it's fuller than the aroma suggests, and includes everything found in the aroma in the order that I noted them with some additional breadiness, a touch of bittersweet dark chocolate, and some earthy, herbal, and spicy hops. There's a firm bitterness to it and it finishes dry with some residual roastiness, earthiness, spiciness, and even a touch of what seems like lemon rind lingering. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. The head held up fairly well initially but once it dropped the lacing became limited. I've never had a beer quite like this in the Czech Republic but it's certainly within the bullseye area for the style. I hope Tired Hands continues to make beers like this although I do also love their hop monsters.
