First had: on tap at the brewpub
An exclusive beer served to those of us wearing costumes at the '12 All Hallows Eve dinner.
This was a blend of Creature ESB and Black Lagoon black saison, which I guess still makes it a quasi-saison, but I just labeled it a black & tan for now. Assuming an even mix, the ABV would be around 6.5%.
Pour was opaque black with touches of dark brown around the edges, and a solid cap of tan head; nice retention and lacing. Nice roasty aroma, semi-sweet chocolate and ground coffee, caramel. Great balance in the taste, dark roasty malts, sweet caramel and candied yams, coffee bitterness, notes of grass and earthy hops. Both base beers were quite smooth in the mouthfeel, and that translated well into the blend.
I really think this was much better than the regular Black Lagoon, with the body and fuller flavors of the ESB significantly fleshing out the thinness of the saison, while still maintaining a good dark color and nice level of roastiness.
