A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2013. Picked up a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. Described on the label as a wheat beer with a hint of lemongrass.
Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A bright, hazy golden-amber hue with virtually no carbonation. Yields a small head of frothy white foam that dissipates almost immediately. First appearances aren't too promising. Aroma of mild lemon/citrus with hints of bready wheat, bubblegum, faint banana and earthy yeast. A subtle vinegary twang lurks in the background - possible oxidation or infection?
Tastes of light wheat and yeast, with a dry finish. Notes of mild lemon, wheat, grain, earthy yeast, a hint of bubblegum, faint banana and stewed herbs. Well-attenuated. A twinge of acidity in the background, followed by a yeasty character upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and bone-dry, but flat, textureless and slightly watery. Mildly astringent, with an aftertaste of yeast, faint herbs and a hint of lemon.
Meh - disappointing. The description sounds fantastic however the execution is seriously flawed. Nice colour but uncarbed and has no head to speak of. The aroma and flavour are OK-ish; the lemongrass is discernible and the wheat character come through. Poor body - flat and watery. I also think the lack of carbonation reduces the impact of the flavour. I can't tell if this is just a little oxidised or infected, but either way it falls below expectations. This must be the third RedWillow brew I've had with problems; in a crowded market they need to up their game. If you see it - caveat emptor.
