A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2015. Picked up quite recently from Trembling Madness in York. A Christmas special - a barrel-aged blend of their Chocolate and Imperial stouts.
A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A very dark brown hue that appears ultra-black in the glass. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of rich roasted malt with hints of burnt grain, smoke, coffee, mild chocolate, molasses, subtle dried fruit and earthy yeast. A big beer with a big flavour.
T: Tastes of intense roasted malt and smoke with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, smoked malt, coffee, molasses, mild chocolate, vague dried fruit, earthy yeast and stewed leaves. Possesses a faintly vinous quality. Well-attenuated, followed by a malty bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with soft carbonation and decent body. Could perhaps be a tad thicker. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of smoky roasted malt, earthy yeast and bitterness.
O: Tasty stuff - bigger and better than the average Christmas brew. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour are seriously beefy. Roasted malt, smoke and yeast notes combine to tantalise the palate, while the barrel-aging adds extra depth of character. Decent body; just a shade too thin for the style. A delicious stout and not a bauble in sight. Worth sampling if you come across it.
