A 330ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2019. Purchased a while back from Trembling Madness in York. The label calls it a Brett DIPA and describes it as 100% brettanomyces fermented and hopped with Nelson Sauvin and Mosaic. The IBUs are deliberately low to complement the yeast profile.
A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A hazy orange-amber colour with light carbonation and fine suspended sediment. Yields a decent head of frothy white foam that lasts for a minute or so before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of tart fruitiness with hints of barnyard funk, mustiness, earthy yeast, faint tropical fruit, a touch of caramel malt and vague stewed hops in the background. Possesses overtones of HP sauce, which is very weird. A bit muddled.
T: Tastes of fruity yeast with notes of sharp berries, mustiness, funk, earthiness, faint tropical fruit, a hint of caramel malt and a whisper of stewed hops. Very dry, with little bitterness to speak of.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with soft carbonation and decent body. Quite astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of tart berries, musty yeast, mild funk, earthiness, fruity notes and faint stewed hops.
O: OK but a bit incoherent. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour have a distinct brett profile accompanied by fruity hints and subtle malt. Body is decent enough. It doesn't quite work - I think the the choice of hops and the brett character don't really complement each other. A little bitterness is needed for balance, and perhaps consideration of how the hop character will devolve as the beer ages. Maybe this was better when it was fresh? A worthy effort but the end result is an odd duck.
