A 330ml bottle with a BB of March 2013. Given to me by my brother for my birthday - thanks bro! The label mentions that this was created to celebrate the brewery's 200th brew, and will be brewed every 100 thereafter. It's also their hoppiest beer to date - oh yeah :)
Poured into a Delirium chalice. Bottle conditioned. A hazy golden-amber hue with good carbonation and a ton of chunky sediment (agitated by the carbonation). Produces a vast head of creamy white foam with excellent stability; this slowly subsides to a thick surface layer. Aroma of intense fruity hop notes: mango, melon, white grape, tropical fruit and citrus. This is underpinned by earthy yeast esters and subtle malt, along with a background whiff of mature cheddar cheese.
Tastes of intense aromatic hops with a powerful bitter finish. Notes of white grape, melon, tropical fruit, mild citrus, earthy yeast esters, malt and stewed hops. Massive bitterness upon swallowing - it dominates the flavour and overshadows the aromatic hops. A faint hint of yeasty funk in the background - possibly due to the sediment in the glass. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and mildly spicy, with tingly carbonation. Decent body for the style/strength. Highly astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops and faint yeast notes.
A monster IPA with a huge hop presence. Looks good, even though the carbonation helped to dislodge yeast from the bottle. Lots of fruity hops in the aroma; the flavour is more dominated by a strident hoppy bitterness. The malt takes a definite back seat. Mouthfeel is pleasant but perhaps just a smidge too thin. A quality American-style IPA that could go head-to-head with many US offerings. A hophead's dream; if hops are your thing then don't hesitate to grab one of these when you see it.
