Appearance: Happoshu yellow - it could practically be a Pantone color - with a bone-white head, impressive at first, but ultimately wispy and brittle with large bubbles.

Smell: Grainy and actually sort of pleasant. Sort of. Not as vegetal as a lot of other happoshu, but it's definitely still happoshu.

Taste: Dry and grainy and a little soapy, exceedingly light and a little metallic - but not terrible, with a surprisingly nice, hoppy, husky finish, which is where most happoshu suck the most.

Mouthfeel: Parchingly dry. Light as a feather. Both good things in a happoshu, but this could actually benefit from a slightly fuller, slicker body.

Drinkability: I kind of like this beer. I like the 100% barley one better, but I like this one, too. A very good matsuri beer, actually - an ice-cold one can be pretty nice on a hot, muggy Japanese summer day.

crystal clear golden yellow. awesome head and lacing for the style, this looks a little better than a lot of happoshus. smell is on par with the rest, which is to say almost nonexistent. the best way i can describe the smell is typical happoshu. kind of like sour tap water, but not bad.

taste is surprisingly smooth. very simple, but inoffensive. this far more closely resembles a lager than the retchid likes of draft one, etc... (the new generation of beer-like beverages) this is an old school happoshu, and a pretty good one.

Ingredients: Barley, malt, hops, sugar
Oddly florescent yell, no head.
Annonymous aroma.
Taste of grain husk with slight bitterness.
Aftertaste of old car apholstery.
This might work with kimchi fried rice or yakisoba, or some other food that has enough intensity to make you forget what you are drinking is swill of that is arguably called beer.

I'm pretty fired up that my favorite "Happoshu" made the BeerAdvocate's radar. In a country where "beer" is very very expensive, this "non-beer" is my goto beer of choice. Happoshu is designed by its ingredients to avoid the Japanese tax on beer. I haven't quite gotten why it's not beer, but it might have something to do with the malt content?? Not sure--but it's an extremely drinkable beer this one, which surprises compared to all the other Happoshus available. Besides its drinkability, it's a normal to bad beer, no pretenses there. If you're short on cash in Japan though, this is your beer. One a day keeps the yen at bay.
