Served in a nonic pint glass, it pours a deep and very dark brown with two fingers of a frothy, creamy brown head, with very good retention.
Some lacing is visible after the head starts to fade.
The beer maintains a thin layer of dark brown foam, nicely decorating the glass.

Dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, charred wood, earthy hoppiness, coffee in the bouquet, which is strong and alluring. A subdued citric, fruity note is also present as an undertone.

The flavor follows the nose.
Cola, slight spiciness as in clove and pepper, some plums, pine, smoke, vanilla, and a herbal/citrusy freshness are added to the mix.
An unbalanced beer tilting towards bitterness with a lot of character to it, medium to full body and a nice high carbonation that makes the mouthfeel so smooth and delicious.
The aftertaste is semi-dry, long and very strong with the toasted notes.

A very, very nice and complex beer.

A:
Pours an opaque black with a big, solid two fingers of mocha head that eases down to one or so. Good retention; lots of even lacing. (4)

S:
Mocha with some green citrus in the background. Loads of rich dark chocolate and roasty coffee with a light lemony twang under it all. (3.75)

T:
“Light” stout flavor on the whole. Lots of roasty coffee bitterness with less of the smooth, sweet cocoa present in the nose. Little hop presence except as a slightly resinous, dry afterburn. (3.5)

M:
Dry, thinnish, medium body, medium carbonation, lingering roast aftertaste. (3.5)

O:
Decent enough beer, but not my cup of tea all the way.
Nice in the glass, good aroma and flavor. Both could do with more hops as far as I am concerned, but I can't really complain as it is within the brewery's freshness window. The body was also a little thin for my liking. All in all this is an okay beer, but I think it is a good picture of why this is a fairly divisive style. There is a lot that needs to be just right and a lot that ends up unimpressive if it isn't. Might have again if offered to me, but not something I would seek out in the future. (3.75)

Pours opaque black with a huge beige head that remains throughout the drink down. The smell is of pine, cocoa, citrus and faint vanilla. Taste follows the nose. Well balanced and tasty.Drinks more like a hoppy porter than a black IPA.

P: Dark black with a thick dense the finger head that lasts. Great lacing.
A: Roasted malt, resin, citrus.
T: Not far from the aroma. Citrus orange, roasted coffee and malt, a bit of spicey pepper.
M: Crisp, clean, dry. Mildly bitter. Nice balance of sweet and peppery. Medium body.
O: Two squares left of centre of a black IPA. Insurgente did a fabulous job in creating a different beer. Well done!

beautiful pour in the glass. ultra dark brown with a nice foamy layer on top. smell is of dark maltiness and some pine bitter. very easy to drink. not super light but it doesnt weigh the palate down either. funky after taste of some kind of spice, but not overly heavy. better than i was expecting from 'down south'....

Bottled on: 8/25/15.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thick swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, char, pine needle, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great mix of cocoa, char, and citrus forward hops all around.

Serving type: bottle.

Deep black color with a huge mushroom caramel head with great retention and leaving laces.
Delicious aroma with notes of lychee, fresh oranges, pine, plums, caramels and licorice.
Citrusy flavor with notes of roasted malts, charred wood, mild lactic acid, lots of plums and grapefruit, American yeast, cola, pine, spices, some ashes and dark chocolate. Very dry aftertaste with big long lasting bitterness and residual roasted notes.
Medium towards full body with appropriate carbonation.
Second in a row great Black IPA from Mexico. It pays off to be close to the American border. This is bold, hoppy, deep, harmonious and it carries good complexity. Worth trying.

Appearance - Pours a dark cola brown with two fingers of foamy tan head.

Smell - roasted malts, citrus and piney hops, grapefruit peel, pepper.

Taste - Starts off with the roasted malts. It then trails into the citrus and piney hops as well as the grapefruit peel and a hint of the pepper.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes roasty from the malts and then quickly goes into the citrus and piney hops.

Overall - An interesting venture of the Black IPA style with the roasted malts taking the forefront while the hops come into play at the end. I like this unique twist as I've sampled many Black IPA's that are hop forward and then the roasted malts act as a supporting cast.
