Got this one from my mate Doopie. Not sure what to make of that.
From a bottle into a snifter
IBU: 85
Brewers Gold, Magnum, Cascade & Chinook
APPEARANCE: No slow foamer on this one. Bonus. Clear dark brown pour yields a 1 ½ finger, medium looking, somewhat creamy, light tan head with good retention. Transparent black body with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full wisp and leaves some nice lacing down the glass. Splotchy wisp and bubbly ring remain leaving lots of good lacing down the glass. Nice head and lacing but the stout could be darker for the style.
SMELL: Lots of woody aromas, with oak, some tart cherry aromas, light vanilla and whisky, as well as leather and tobacco notes from the base beer. Pretty well put together, actually, though very wood forward.
TASTE: Oak, some whisky, with more wood and some tartness at the swallow. Tart cherry notes actually. Bolder and lingering finish is very woody, with a touch of vanilla, some cherry tartness, a bit of whisky and some hop bitterness. Notes of tobacco in there as well. This is an interesting beer but not your typical whisky barrel aged stout.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine and finishes a touch mouth-coating. A bit of a burn lingers, but minimal.
OVERALL: An interesting barrel aged stout. Not your typical whisky barrel aged aromas and flavors, but the overt woodiness and slightly tart cherry characteristics are interesting on their own. Not sure if this is something I’d want a repeat glass of, but certainly something worthy of a try. Give it a shot if you see it somewhere. Cheers Doopie!
