Picked up a 33cl bottle from De Bierkoning in Amsterdam, poured in a Tulip glass
Fairly standard Russian Imperial Stout - no carbonation, thick malt flavor, high alcohol content. Subtle hints of chocolate, but otherwise a very dry aftertaste.
Overall, not a bad beer, but otherwise there are a lot more exciting things going on in this style.

Got this one at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Drinking it beside a regular version.
From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled November 2012
Bottle 237 of 480
Stoute Gijt on Laphraoig / Eylandt barrels
APPEARANCE: Slowly started to foam out of the bottle. Same pour as the base, coming out clear brown and muddy. Produces a smaller, medium looking, light tan head with good retention. Bistre brown with little carbonation evident. Head ends up as a faint wisp. A light ring remains but leaves no real lacing down the glass. The head on this is less impressive than the original one, and the body is just as transparent and muddy.
SMELL: Muted nose, but the faint laphraoig barrel is there. Some light peaty notes and smoky aromas with some leather and a touch of tobacco. Quite faint all around. A hint of tart cherries as well, which probably wasn't intentional.
TASTE: Flavor is a bit more forthcoming. Some leather and tobacco again, with some decent peaty and smoky flavors from the barrels. Some odd tart fruit notes, like red berries and lemon flavors through the middle as well. Aftertaste is bold enough with leather, tobacco and some peaty, smoky earthy tones, as well as some decent hop bitterness after the swallow. A touch of spicy alcohol lingers on the palate, as well as a light tartness. The barrels are alright and not overpowering, allowing the base beer to play a roll. Too bad the base beer isn't all that great itself.
PALATE: A little fuller than the regular, with more weight as well. Medium body and slightly lower levels of carbonation. Creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes a touch dry. Not bad here.
OVERALL: The tart cherries makes me wonder what was intended and where this one is headed. Perhaps it's best to consume all 480 of these things asap. As it stands now though, this is an improvement on the base beer, which itself isn't all that enjoyable. The barrel is well measured and adds a nice smoky, earthy character that actually works well with the leather and tobacco flavors this beer brings to the table. The tartness is also kind nice too. The nose is a little mute and the color too light and transparent, but otherwise, this is a decent effort. Fixing the foaming bottles would help with the experience as well.
