I really purchased this beer for two reasons, it was a Dunkel, and it had a pull ring top. The second must be the reason it is almost flat. No head to speak of, just a mere wisp of foam to let you know the beer once was carbonated. The aroma has a caramel sweetness, but it also a little stale. I also pickup some chocolate in the aroma.

The flavor is chocolate and sweet and then finshes with a slight lingering roastiness that coats the tongue and leaves you with a feeling like you just ate a chocolate toosie pop. The mouthfeel is a little bigger than I would have expected from a 4.8% beer, but is probably the most pleasant thing about it.

The drinkability is middle of the road die to the lack of head, sweetness, and aftertaste. The flavor is akin to the candy of a chocolate tootsie pop, great for candy, not so great for beer.

I still like the bottle...

Deep ruby in hue with brilliant clarity. Initially thick, creamy beige head recedes quickly into a spotty layer that manage sparse foam trails. Sweet, dark caramel and sugary, fructose like sweetness dominates the aroma, along with an undertone of herbal hops and vegetal, wilted cabbage tinged DMS. Trace chocolate malt. Not particularly well rounded or appetizing aromawise. Syrupy caramel malt derived and residual, unfermented sweetness hits the palate up front and lingers, until a vague chocolate malt and toasty Munich malt presence attempts depth, but falls well short. Paltry, non descript hop bitterness provides meager contrast to malt character, resulting in nearly overbearing sweetness overall. Thin, yet syrupy mouthfeel adds to the cloying nature of this sad dunkel. Caramel malt presence, becomes progressively even more syrupy and is downright cola like late. Finishes with a sticky impression of Hershey's syrup spiked draft Pepsi. Wow... Quite a disappointment. It's akin to an overly filtered Samichlaus heavily diluted with cheap, Sam's Club cola. Very difficult to finish. Would be improved by a couple drops of isomerized hop acids added to the glass. Although this was an old bottle and is approaching 10 months, I doubt it had much hop character to start out with. Almost awful. Spezial? Please.

Looking at everyone else's reviews, I think I got a good bottle. Mine had some really great head retention and lasted the whole drink. The color was a jet amber with an off white/tanish head. The head was quite frothy in the beginning and actually stayed quite thick all the way through. This had tastes of caramel, nuts, and some darker fruits. The fruity taste wasn't too strong though. Also, along with the aforementioned tastes, there was a little bite of hops, but nothing that the untrained taste bud would notice. I thought this was a decent beer. Sure, it's not as good as the Urbock, but it's still pretty tastey.

An unexpectedly dark red-tinged brown (with a creamy tan head) and an equally surprising coffee character in the flavor. It’s not overbearing or too astringent, but most dunkels just don’t have it. There’s also some mellow toffee malt sweetness, but overall it’s pretty smooth and just a bit dry.

Not too bad, I was hoping for a bit more flavor, but what’s there is decent and fairly drinkable.

Poured from a .5L bottle to a glass mug the liquid is dark brown with good carbonation. The head is a nice 2 finger, mocha tan that leaves good lace.

The smell is sweet dark chocolate, coffee and floral malty goodness.

The taste follows but is a tad too sweet. the floral and sweetness dominate.

The mouthfeel is good for the style, medium body and good carbonation.

The drinkability is good. Really a nice brew. If you like a sweeter dunkel it is a must try. Prosit, MK

On-tap at Rustico Restaurant & Bar, Alexandria, VA

A: The beer is very dark amber in color (close to near black) and had a one finger beige head that quickly died down.
S: There's a light to moderate aroma of some malty sweetness in the nose.
T: The overall taste is very well balanced and has lots of flavors of dark caramel malts along with some hints of chocolate and dark fruits.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very smooth on the palate.
D: The beer is extremely easy to consume.

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was coke a cola colored with a nice tan head that was very thich and nice. It smelled and tasted kinda spiced and was good at first taste but seemed to have a bit of a soapy taste afterwards. The decayed rather quickly. I think I waill not buy this one again.
