Appearance – No head on a clear brown body.

Aroma – Roasted malts and somewhat nutty.

Taste – Roasted malt, milk chocolate, slightly sweet.

Mouthfeel – Full and good for a bock, not thick.

Overall – Pretty good, not heavy but rich and flavorful.

Origin Of Species pours a roasted hazelnut color out of the can, but when held to light it glimmers the most beautiful scarlet red. A lazy and barely off white head descends back into the liquid quickly, but leaves a decent coverage and little lacing.

Burnt caramel, bread crusts, and raisin join together for a wonderful "Bock" presence. Searching deeper, chocolate and nutmeg lay in the background.

A much more dominant roasted character starts the parade of flavors. Roasted nuts and chocolate come through first followed by sweet sticky buns. There is a strong spice coming through on the end with some floral bitterness.

As with the flavor, this takes on waves of feel. Roasted, sweet, spicy, lightly bitter. A sturdy and malty body is brought up by a good bubbly carbonation which helps it end dry. I'd call this well balanced, despite its roasted and spicy bitterness.

Bocks of all styles are some of my favorite beers. This is a well made dark Bock that is unique, and delicious. One that I would gladly over indulge in. It's not overly sweet like some, and the dry finish make it superbly capable of being a quick an easy Saturday afternoon 6 pack. Thanks again Patrick. Prost!

Poured from a 12 ounce can purchased at the brewery into a pint glass. Reddish brown color with a two finger head that had lasting power. Aroma is of maltiness. Good tasting bock, a somewhat neglected style these days. A little too fizzy on the mouth feel; otherwise a solid Maibock.

Cola like ruby mahogany body. Opaque. I finger beige head fizzes away quickly.
The aroma is deep roasted malts with slightly burnt toast.
The taste follows the nose, roasted malts, dark toast, molasses, dates and grape skin.
Medium body with active carbonations. A nice prickly spiciness helps the creamy finish.

 

 

Brownish/red in appearence, with lighttan head and plenty of lacing. Smell and taste are malt and coffee, plus added flavors of dark fruit, maybe some banana and some chocolate. Medium mouthfeel. Overall a very good beer

 

I’ll keep this simple as Bock beers are not widely available around here and I have little experience with them, but enough to write this review. I said they’re available winter when I entered it as a new brew, but I’m not 100% sure as there’s little info on this particular microbrew. Historically, bock beers are available in the winter months.

Anyhow, onto the attributes:
Look - It’s a beautiful deep rich brown with deep red hues with a nice creamy head.
Smell - Typically for a bock beer but deep lager wheat like. (Hard to explain)
Taste - This is the kicker, very rich thick dark toffee with coffee like chocolate notes.
Feel - More bubbly than a typical bock beer and that’s a good feel not a real fizzy one.

This beer was rated for it’s style, not up against some of favorite complex IPA’s. All in all, a very well brewed bock beer.
