The first offering in Relic's Summer Experiment Series. Brewer describes this as a "Single Hop Sorachi Ace German Hefeweizen".
Steady pour from a Relic Growler into tall Relic glass. Hazy, shimmering-yellow straw colored liquid with tight foamy 2 inch bright white head.
Aroma has a distinct wheat beer character with the typical banana and clove notes. Grassy, herbal, earthy, some lemon, with an uncharacteristic light-roasty/smoke scent wafting over the top of the glass (that persists through several further pours). I have to say that I have never detected that in any hefeweizen before. I like it, as it adds an unexpected depth & richness to the brew, and it was noted right off the bat. Nice touch.
Flavor is of bright fruity esters and spice. Again, some lemon from the hops but enjoyable, not disgusting lemonade-beer. Clean, soft mouthfeel of a quality hefewizen. Quaffable.
I hope the brewer keeps this one in his rotation, particularly in summer.
