Appearance - Pours a clear light copper with three fingers of foamy off-white head.

Smell - Bready and biscuity malts, caramel, earthy/leafy hops, hint of nutty aromas, apple, pear.

Taste - Rich malty flavour with notes of caramel and earthy hops. I still get that bit of nuttiness (chestnut, almost) that I picked up in the aroma. A little buttery.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and dry.

Overall - A malty amber from the ladies and gents at Village. Definitely a tasty offering for those with a gluten intolerance. Not the greatest amber I've ever tasted, but worth giving it a taste the next time you see it at your local store.

330ml, embossed bottle - a gluten reduced, 'uncommon' amber ale, once you wade through the cutesy marketing babble on the teeny neck label.

This beer pours a clear, medium orange-brick amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some streaky mountain snow cap lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells of biscuity and grainy caramel malt, some red delicious apple and overripe pear fruitiness, a twinge of ashy smoke (the kind you get out of roasted Italian chestnuts in autumn), and some tame leafy, herbal, and mildly floral green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a lesser biscuity toffee sweetness, herbal tea, mixed pome and domestic citrus fruit notes, maybe a hint of roasted coffee beans, and more understated earthy, leafy, and weedy hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate for the job, via its structurally sound frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, with a wee airy creaminess kicking off as things warm up a tad. It finishes well off-dry, the caramel malt, fruitiness, and earthy, leafy hops doing well to play us out.

Overall, there's no way that I could divine that this was a gluten tampered-with brew, which is normally the case when brewers use the enzymatic reduction method, as opposed to using only shitty GF ingredients. So there's really no 'enigma', here, other than why this kind of typically lacking style turns out to be one of this operation's better offerings.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 27/9/16

A clear amber liquid with a finger of foam that fizzes out in seconds leaving no lace

s herbal tea, sweet malt, red wine gums, bruised apple, maybe a little hazelnut and hard dark toffee

T earthy, herbal, soggy cereal, some leafy notes, just a faint hint of cocoa, OK but I preferred the nose

M fairly light, just enough carbonation to give it some life, very slick on the palate, leafy finish

O nothing's wrong with it but leaves a little something to be desired, there's enough going on but everything seems a little faint

kinda remind me of a Marzen with the malty leafy notes, makes me think of Fall drinking the stuff
