Heard village was brewing a new IPA and was excited to try it out. Maiden is a fair mistress but I can't help but look for something with a little more to love. She pours amber, piney and herbal, taste has the desired bitterness accented by the spice.
Ok I get it, hops and basil have a similar taste.

650ml bottle - the 2016 version of the community-provided ingredients ale made by this Cowtown brewery.
This beer pours a clear, not so pale bronzed amber colour, with two skinny fingers of puffy, rocky, and somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves some creepy forest tendril lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of some fairly herbal and green grassy bitterness up front, bready and crackery caramel malt, muddled domestic citrus peel, a tame earthy basil spiciness, white and black pepper dust, and a hint of hovering metallic booziness. The taste is bready and doughy pale and caramel malt, mixed basil, green pepper, and black pepper spicy notes, hard to discern grapefruit, orange, and lemon citrus bitters, some ethereal earthy yeastiness, and more leafy, weedy, and floral green hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly light in its quotidian frothiness, the body a serious-ass medium weight, and mostly smooth, with just a mild earthy and herbal acridity sitting in, and making a minor fuss here. It finishes off-dry, the herbal quality challenging the lingering pale graininess for top billing,
Overall, this is a pleasant enough version of the style, with a nice seasonal spice affectation delivered via the basil addition. Easy to drink, despite my initial reservations at having this particular spice in my beer, and a good arrival in the local autumn beer lexicon.

The newest version of the Gardener from Village.
Appearance - Pours a dark copper with three fingers of creamy tan head.
Smell - herbal and citrus hops, basil. bready malts, toffee, grapefruit peel, and lemon.
Taste - bitter herbal and citrus hop notes upfront followed by the basil. The bready malts and toffee follow suit. The grapefruit peel and lemon help to finish the brew off.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a lingering bitterness from the hops alongside a pleasant leafiness from the basil.
Overall - A unique IPA that is a true representation of what Village brewery is all about. This community involved ale is by far Village's best. I admire the touch of basil as it added a unique flavour profile to the brew. An exceptional IPA that Village should be proud of.
