Pours a murky, brownish-orange color, dark, opaque brown in the glass; initial fizzy head that rapidly dissipates to a thin, wispy ring around the glass. Big nose; toffee and caramel sweetness; dark pitted dried fruit, dates and figs; chewing tobacco. The taste amplifies the smell sensation with a big does of brown sugar, dark maple syrup, whiskey, and building on the chewing tobacco element; subdued spiciness, star anise and peppery. Heavy body; boozy warmth; tingling stickiness.
Some beers hide their ABV quite well, others, such as this beer, feature it and in a bold, good way. The beer may seem brash at first, but as it warms and opens up, it really shines and offers a well-balanced yet hard-hitting beer experience. If huge barrel-aged dark beers are your thing, this one is definitely worth a try.
ABV: 19.6%; pouring temperature: 44.5 °F; bottling info: Vintage: 2024; cases bottled: 99; barrel: Colorado whiskey
