Klingon Warnog is an official Star Trek TM beer brewed under license by Tin Man Brewing Company of Evansville, Indiana. This singular beer incorporates rye malt into a moders Dunkelweizen grain bill, creating a flavor profile that is both familiar and unique. Warnog's aroma is predominantly mild banana and clove produced by the German wheat yeast, supported by subtle sweet malt character from the use of Munich malt.
The flavor draws heavily from the blending of the rye malt and traditional clove character, creating a very rich and unique flavor. The inclusion of wheat and caramel malts help to round out the mouthfeel of this beer, making this Dunkelweizen heartly enough to be called a Klingon Warnog.

Served from a can in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.
Full disclosure: I'm not very into Star Trek. For me, The Next Generation was pretty solid, and First Contact was the best film. Still, I'm willing to try a rye-laced dunkelweizen. Why not? It pours a clear sunset amber topped by over a finger of light sandstone foam. Probably the lightest dunkel-anything ever, I'd venture. The nose comprises musty grains, dank dark greens, light flowers, mild banana peel, and a touch of what may or may not be clove. The taste brings in more of the same, the clove aspect coming through more bluntly and forcefully than a mob of Chicago beer nerds at a special barrel-aged stout release. Something about this just doesn't sit right with me. The body is a light medium, with a surprisingly light carbonation and a thickly liquid feel. Overall, I like the idea of this beer (the recipe, anyway, not the advertising and whatnot), but the execution leaves plenty to be desired: The clove is overpowering, the rye barely exists, and the rest of the base is pretty introverted, making the overall product a bit of a disappointment.

Can: Poured a light copper color ale with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light caramel malt is pretty bland. Taste is also dominated by light caramel malt with limited aftertaste. Body is about average with OK carbonation. Bland and easily forgettable.

16 oz. can into a pint glass (some left in can to top up later)
A - Creamy khaki head that slowly dissipates (about 1 finger thick). Head disappears to a thin creamy layer which is retained. Beer is amber/light mahogany in color. Hazy appearance with slow rising carbonation. Seems to be lightly carbonated. 3.75/5
S - Dark bread with some toffee sweetness to the nose. Light hint of spices. Dates and plums are noticeable. Hops seem to be floral. 4/5
T - Toffee and caramel sweetness that is interrupted by a spiciness. A bit doughy and yeasty in the middle. I don't notice a fruitiness here that I came to expect from the aroma. Bitterness is more noticeable than expected and lingers somewhat on the back end. Very slight banana ester on the very back end. 3.75/5
M - Very smooth and creamy along with moderate carbonation that lightens it up a bit. Medium bodied. Drying astringency on the back end that lingers. 3.75/5
O - Interesting offering that was very enjoyable. Very sweet and spicy which are both more prevalent than any bitterness (although there is some of that too). 3.75/5

Pours a dense, frothy tan head that has great persistence. Spicy, yeasty aroma. Hazy, straw/burnt umber color. Starts with a metallic, spicy rye flavor. There is a little bit of a yeasty, rye flavor near the end. Finish is more metallic and a touch of rye. This is really watery.
This is pretty mediocre. There isn't a really strong rye flavor, though the dunkel under it seems okay. The mouthfeel is really thin. I guess this is what I get for buying a 4-pack because it has a Klingon logo on it, hahah

Has a pull by date of 01/14/15
Appearance - Pours hazy and copper in color with a half finger's worth of khaki colored head. Fizzes out fairly quick, leaving a mostly barren surface.
Smell - Light, bu what can be picked up is sugary caramel and light traces of clove.
Taste - Like the nose, light flavors with caramel and spice are most evident, though a watered down character subdues much of everything. Ghostly traces of banana. Finish has a light cardboard staleness. Not getting much rye.
Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with little carbonation. Watery.
Overall - Not egregiously over the best by date, but is probably a lesser beer than what was initially brewed. Having said that, I didn't find much to think this is a much better brew when fresh. I've had dunkels way out of freshness date with significantly more flavor than this. If I ever get the chance to re-review with a fresher sample though, I find it my due diligence to do so.
