Pull-tab can nabbed at Liquorland, East Hamilton, New Zealand. Cost was ~$9-10 NZD.
Collaboration with Trillium Brewing. 8% ABV. "Hazy IPA." Features a
dry hop addition of New Zealand Nelson Sauvin and Rakau hops."
Powdery soft mouthfeel. Hop profile is citrusy, juicy, slightly oily, pulpy, and myrcene-redolent though not overtly mango forward. Smooth, wet, refreshing, well carbonated, on the light side of medium-bodied (especially for an 8% ABV ale).
I do think this showcases Rakau hops well, but what's disappointingly absent are any gooseberry or white wine redolent flavours from the Nelson Sauvin. This beer seems to be targeting an international marriage of Yakima Valley hops and Nelson area New Zealand hops, but it lets down with the Kiwi side of the marriage, trending towards less interesting American hop flavour.
More drinkable than an 8% ABV hoppy ale ought to be, which I attribute to its powdery soft mouthfeel that makes it dangerously approachable. No boozy warmth is present to warn the drinker of its oomph.
Orange juice acidity does reduce its drinkability somewhat; it's hard to imagine sharing a whole pitcher of this with friends or pairing it comfortably with spicy food.
Trillium has ridden the hype train all the way to the top, and Garage Project has a high reputation in New Zealand, so one would expect any collaboration betwixt them to be top tier. I can't say this is a top IPA for me and I don't know that it showcases its two dry hop varietals to their utmost potential, but it's certainly drinkable and enjoyable without quite dazzling.
