Inspired by the unique roast character of Japanese Genmai, Kohaku is a smooth amber lager, brewed with four malts and a portion of deliciously aromatic freshly roasted rice. Delicately hopped with Czech Saaz, this crisp, clean lager pours a rich amber with a touch of caramel malt sweetness on the palate, balanced with restrained bitterness and a delightful light nutty note of roasted rice. Uniquely aromatic and deliciously drinkable.

From the Carwyn Cellars "One" subscription pack March 2023. Drunk in April 2023.

L: Toffee brown with a fluffy white head. Medium levels of carbonation rise up the glass.

S: Brown bread with strong, rich caramel and toffee notes. There is a definite brown rice note in there too, but I wonder if I'd have picked that up if I didn't know it was a rice beer.

T: The taste has strong dark, burnt toffee notes and a smooth, creamy rounded finish that I assume comes from the rice. The bitterness is medium and matches the taste profile well. That brown rice note is evident retronasally and after the swallow. This is very nice.

M: Carbonation and carbonic prickle are noticeable in the mouth, but the beer has a smooth and full body.

O: This is an excellent amber lager, with the smooth, almost nutty rice flavour lending a unique and pleasurable note to the beer. Well done!

Cheers!
