Served in a footed glass at Ale Arsenal. From notes. Reviewed 15 November 2013.
Blood-dark. Ruby. Opaque. Smells roasted and excellent. Chocolate covered fruit. Lots of chocolate; enough so that I wonder if it's been added. Fruit too, mostly berries. But honestly it's almost oppressively decadent. Aftertaste is lightly bitter. Overall, pretty okay but I wouldn't have another.

Pours a blackish color with an off-white head. Smells primarily of roasted malts. A touch of citrus, maybe a bit of bitter cocoa powder. Some black pepper and some chalk, as well. The flavor is surprisingly bitter. As with the aroma, primarily roasted malts on the palate. Heavy on the chalk, black pepper, and bitter orange, too.

On tap at Monkish Brewing Company in Torrance, CA.
Pours a clear super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and some citrus aromas. Taste is of dark roasted malt, citrus zest, and slight cocoa. There is a mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.
