Poured from 22oz bomber into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: dark red/brown hue with lots of haze and a finger of frothy tan foam. A bit dark for the style, but not bad overall.

Smell: big, citrusy hops over a sweet, perhaps a little caramelly malt base that results in a rather candy-like aroma. There's a little bit of biscuity toast underneath that I don't like as much, but mostly it's very interesting.

Taste: sweet and bready with a fair bit of caramel, and those big, fruity, citrusy hops atop. I ... actually quite like this beer.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: I don't know why I should be surprised, but this beer is quite good. I'm not always a fan of the style, but the hops are brought here in a really appropriate way. Totally worth checking out.

 

Served in Nonic. Poured a clean, clear medium-dark red with 1/4 inch of tan head that had low retention and decent lacing.

The aroma and flavors were fairly typical for the style. Solid malt base, slight sweetness, slight hop tang.

The body was also typical, smooth, even, and medium. Drinkability was good, the beer goes down easily and smoothly. Overall, while a pretty generic example of the style, it's also a very good example of the style. It would make an excellent "training wheel" brew for someone just starting their good beer journey.

 

Attractive sudsy and lacy appearance in the Kasteel chalice. Modest height of head but quite fine-grained fizz in the mouth. Color is a coppery amber. The aroma is odd. I think of celery tonic and green beans.

Malty to start with some sweetness. A slight nutty flavor plus an herbal note. Hops are leafy, somewhat resiny, with a woody character. A little dirty. Moderate bitterness. Overall this is rather fragrant and the creamy carbonation makes each sip a pleasure.

This is pretty much the classic Red Ale but with a restrained bitterness. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at The Market in Anacortes for five bucks.

 

 

A--A dark red,brown/golden hue with a small, thin head...fantastic lacing :~)

S--A complex hop aroma balanced with sweet, spicy, malty, carmely with a big 'wiff' of hops!

T--Lots of caramel malts, which provide a sweeter taste...sweet, roasted, carmely malt dominates with a hint of chocolate and a hint of cinamon/pine spice with a slight citrusy hop backbone. The malt gives the beer a pleasant medium caramel flavor...

M--Medium carbonation and a very creamy texture. Velvety smooth.

O--Some great dry hops in this beer...six different hops are used in this beer, including Chinook which adds a Northwest outdoors pine aroma, a strong homage to the style...although I'm not a huge fan of ambers/reds, I love this one...no complaits...chasin' cheers :~)
