While the haze craze leads many brewers to add an extraordinary amount of vegetal matter to the somberly bitter IPA, Bell's looks at the style a little differently. They take an ordinary pale wheat ale that has the wheaten haze built in already and layers it with a plethora of aromatic hops to achieve something uniquely similar.

A rich and yolky yellow pour builds a patient froth of cotton and cream. Fruity and mildly tangy, the perfume of exotic tropical fruit, citrus and melon fill the nose before the first sip of malt sweetness applies a firm coat of wheat bread, honey and a pastry-like savory flavor on the early palate.

As the ale washes the middle palate, it loosens its sweet and malty grip while the fruity impressions from hops burst to life with a bold display of under ripened oranges, white grapefruit and a kiss of lime. More exotic fruit flavors of pineapple, kiwi and passionfruit follow along with a slight hint of banana. Lightly bittered, the finish becomes herbal, grassy and botanical with a curious drift of chive and geranium following in a retro olfactory action.

Medium bodied throughout, the beer's texture dries to an even keel balance but the wheat substrate keeps the palate creamy and bready. Memories of lemon meringue and key lime come to mind as the beer's waning sips extend into a medium length aftertaste of sassafras and green tea.

White head. Clear golden color.

Floral, earthy, and fruity. Grapefruit citrus. Bready malts. Wheat. Zest. I thought this was supposed to be reminiscent of a NE IPA but I don't see it.

Served in a pint glass at The Montrose. From notes. Reviewed 22 January 2018.

Hazy and shadowy with a finger of loose, white head. Translucent, golden straw.
Smells sharply of citrus with an herbal/garlicky undertone.
Mmmm yes. I am INTO this. Loads of hops, nouveau and tropical. Candied pineapple, dried mango, and a soft malty sweetness. The wheat is not obvious, and the gorgeous hops carry the day. Plenty of lemon and zest in amongst the candied fruit, and the aftertaste is sharp, bitter and clean.
Comes through light and refreshing. This is the sort of beer you can sink your teeth into and not release for a couple of pints. The same could be said of Two-Hearted, perhaps; but this...may prove superior. A sort of stronger counterpart to Lagunitas' fantastic Twelth of Never.
This is not going to change anyone's week, but it could certain color some evenings. A highly nuanced, thoroughly compelling offering from Bell's. I can't wait to buy this in six packs.

a dry hopped amped up version of oberon from what i understand, a tasty and robust glass of beer, drinkable for how flavorful it is, and nice with a steak sandwich! frosted straw colored beer with a belgian looking couple inches of white head on it from the tap and lots of rising carbonation. the aroma here is mosaic and some others, fruity hoppy, vegetal and fresh, but also a little sweet from the wheat malt with notes of honey and vanilla to it, complex and enticing for sure. i like how the hops arent the the first thing i taste here, shades of oberon with the ale yeast and the wheat up front. it doesnt take too long though for the familiar citra mosaic complex to emerge, some tropical fruit and pine in behind it but still low bitterness. very fresh tasting and nice to bounce it off all this wheaty body, it feels almost creamy with the oils from the hops all churned up, well integrated to say the least. lightly bready, still with the honey note, and fluffy and well carbonated. it could be a little drier, but this has tons of character and is a really bold beer for how well balanced it is. more complex than oberon by a mile. they should make this full time...

On tap at Lost Dog McLean. Poured into a shaker pint glass.

A long way from Gumballhead. In this case, the weaker wheat backbone really doesn't support the herbal hop bitterness? 3.5

A - Pours a piss yellow with a slight haze. 3.5

S - Minor flora notes. 3.5

T - Some hops but more of just a bitter wheat beer. 3.75

MF - Medium light body with a dry finish. 3.5

Had on tap. This was a case where the hops are a nice collection, the base beer is pleasant, but together they did not seem to jive. It is like they wanted to be separated on the palate, and not in a good way. Again, not a bad beer, but not life changing. Hoppy, wheaty, and a little tropical.
