This the first of 7 beers celebrating a literary classic and one of our favorites, Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Brewed to the season, this IPA is made with 100% German malt and hops, putting a European twist on a classic American style.

The slightly hazy dark golden colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1” thick ivory head that recedes very slowly while leaving a sheet and web of foam as well along with some lacing on the sides of the glass. Eventually the foam becomes a cap on the liquid and then a ring with an irregular island of foam on the surface Sipping creates a few patches and slender legs of lacing.

The aromas are citric, floral, grassy and lightly spicy. There’s also some bready, honey-like malt showing in the background. As the beer warms the malt moves forward and the hops are more in the background.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with citrus, some light floral and grassy hops along with some lightly spicy, peppery character. In the background there’s some light sweetness from the bready, honey like malt. As with the aromas the honey-like malt sweetness moves more forward with the hops in the background.

The mouth feel is medium bodied and slightly prickly with the persistent finely bubbled carbonation. The finish is long and fairly complex as the various flavors and sweetnes begin to fade but some seem to come and go again until the long dry ending with tangy, lingering peppery/spicy citrus.

Overall this is both an enjoyable and a drinkable beer, as I’ve come to expect from Bells. I’m looking forward to having more of this one while it is still available. I’d say that the idea of using an IPA recipe but with only German Hops and Malt has worked quite well. Give it a try if you are a fan of IPAs.

Being a Bells fan, I’ve never had this one before. Smooth pour into a tulip glass, and a nice slight head. Super hazy and fruitful juicy. I pick up notes of lemon, a gorgeous malt with a mild spice, and possibly a galaxy hop. The cantaloupe flavor is most prevalent to me, and it’s an easy sipping ale. It’s truly some special they created with this one.

Bottled 05/10/2019. Poured into tulip glass. Looks slightly hazy/juicy. Not much head and light carbonation. No lacing. Smells like a nice blend of malts and hops with a slight sense of lemon/citrus. Not strong in aroma but just right. Taste follows the nose and it's just about right. Not too powerful in hops or malts. A rather pleasant blend that's quite quaffable. No bitterness really and a medium mouthfeel with a dry finish. This is overall an enjoyable brew. Fresh might be extraordinary. Give this one a try if you find it.

12 oz bottle with a May 2019 packaging date stamp on the label.
Pours with a hazy pale golden body and a semi-durable white head that leaves decent lacing.
Notably herbal aroma with some lemongrass, hops and faint bread. The lemongrass is more subtle in the flavor which carries more spicy hops.

Pretty tasty IPA the head kind of fizzed out rather quick like a cheap soda but the smell was inviting and the taste is on par if not better than I expected like over ripe melon mixed with grapefruit hops. I was happy to find this and the other two of the series but it makes me sad I couldn't get more.

12oz bottle. Label as bottling date as '05/10/2019'.
Slightly cloudy, pale gold colored body. Hard pour brings forth a two finger white fluffy head. Leaves behind some rings and spots of lacing.
Aroma of floral and earthy hops, which remind me of melon. Also has some orange citrus.
Taste follows the smells, with a big dose of melon from the hops. Has the citrus hops edge that dries out the beer in the mouth and provides a bitter bite.
Medium mouth. Very good carbonation.
Quite a dry IPA with tasty hops that go to the citrus orange and melon flavors. Really has a dry and tight end.
