Argilla Brewing Co. "Abbaye Rose"
on tap at the brewery on 21 March 2015
$5.50 / 12 oz.
Notes: Hazy deep amber with a brass cast and golden glow when held to the light. Limited head retention; it dropped to a thin collar before it was even delivered to the table. Next to no lacing. Aroma: sweet, syrupy, dark sugar with black cherry, Belgian yeast phenolics (mild clove, spice), and some herbal hops. The flavor is similar, sweetish in a sugary way rather than malty, and backed by the cherry-like fruitiness. The herbals and gently spicy components balance it along with a soft bitterness, and lend it an almost cola-like note. Medium bodied and moderately carbonated, it's smooth with just a light zest on the tongue. Pleasant and easily accessible but lacking sparkle.
