A pfft and quick wisp of smoke come from the pop of the top. Easy forming foamcomes on the pour from what seems like very active carbonation. It's effervescent and bubbly. Tose bubbles die quickly, much like champagne. The body is pale golden with enough clarity to glow when backlit. Sonne simply looks refreshing.
The nose is comforting with fresh cracked wheat and a very bready sweetness that works nicely. There are even hints of what I can only think of as rock sugar. Faint, nearly ghost-like, Bazooka Joe esters are present with a whisper of damp graininess. The smell overall is well integrated and comes at you with open arms. With that said, it's not much in line with Berliner weisse.
The flavor profile isn't much in line with a Berliner weisse either. WHeat is bright and freshly cracked with a crisp graininess. There's a little bit of zip in there that's more in line with fresh grains than with sour mash. Bazooka Joe dies down to practically nothing in the flavor, which is OK with me. The backend is slightly floral where that zippiness seems to grow. I like this beer.
It's effervescent upront with a carbonation that's aggressive enough to tingle the tongue but stay shy of overbearing. A light body helps the crispness and refreshability while a highly dry finish brings out some of that zip I mentioned above. A highly drinkable summer beer, one that would do great in 6-packs for the guy on the go.
Sonne doesn't shape up to be much of a Berliner weisse. What it does shape up to be is a crisp, dry, zippy American wheat beer...or so my opinion goes. It goes down incredibly easy and incredibly fast while staying interesting on its way. Certainly worth a shot.
