Stodgy Brown

Tried this at the Columbus beer fest a couple of nights ago. I enjoyed it. Pours medium-brown in color, not much head retention. A strong, potent tasting brown ale. The sharp grainy malt flavors in this seem to add a different perspective than the usual smooth, creamy malt profile of many brown ales.

I'd try this again. I like this brewery so far.

Pours a very slightly hazy brown with thin white head that doesn't last long. The aroma is that of roasted barley and malt.

The flavor follows the aroma. It's malty, slightly sweet, toasty, and very, very mildly bitter. For my taste, it's extremely well balanced and one of my favorite brown ales.

 

 

 

 

 

5.2% ABV, 38 IBU

Very interesting style, German Alt. Stodgy Brown is an above average beer for area. Picked up a growler 8/10/12. Poured into a regular pint glass same evening. Nice foam, creamy off white head, and laced down the glass nicely especially for growler pour. Poured next day with same results.

Appears carmel-brown in color, almost copper to brown with noted clearity (could be filtered..?).

Aroma was warm and nutty with moderate hop (herbal) lingering in background.

Flavor builds along its nutty foundation with a biscuit malty full mouth feel. Along with caughting hints that were earthy, fruity and herbal. Bitterness catches the back and sides of the mouth, however dissipates nicely to a clean finish. Every sip is like experiencing it for the first time.

2 things I really like about this beer: 1. its nutty nature. 2. the crispness at the finish (esp for a 38 IBU's).

All flavors come through equal, well balanced. None overpowering the other. Reminds me of a New Castle in appearance and color, with flavor hints toward the biscuit quality of a Fat Tire.

Added bonus was the food truck in the parking lot, "Things you Grill" (killer pulled pork polish sausage). Will make this my regular Fri night ritual.

Medium shade of brown; looks like weather-worn stained wood. One finger of fizziness drops to a thin, even skim.

Stodgy Brown smells of baked and lightly buttered bread, grains, and, to a lesser degree, cola and earth. It tastes similar. Initially, the beer has a decent bready flavor and a weird, earthy hop tickle. Oh, but then the vapid, dirty ugliness of the finish takes hold. The finish is a long-standing menace of dirt, bitterness that wishes it wasn't astringent, and minerals. The feel is kind of thinnish, but not alarmingly so. However, carbonation is high and bristly.

Overall impression - Ah, some work needs to be done with this here. It'd have like to have fooled me, but there's no hiding that finish.
