I should preface this review by saying that the keg tapped at the Zauber taproom the night of this review definitely had an issue. There were literally pieces of hops floating in the glass. That results in a slight lowering of the score. On another occasion, with a better-filtered keg, I might rate the beer higher.

It pours a cloudy amber with a thick white head that lasts a while.

The aroma is malty and mildly hoppy.

The flavor, perhaps because of the many floating hops particles, was quite hoppy... probably much more so than it should have been. The malt backbone is excellent with malty and nutty elements.

This beer pours a ruddy brown with a deep red hue. Reminds me of the color of the clay of the surrounding areas. Aroma is bready malts with a touch of yeasty spice, largely unoffensive. Taste comes off as somewhere between sweet and dry with heavy doses of bread-like malt coating your tongue. Some dark fruits like fig and plum come through as well. Minimally carbonated. This is a decent brew, and strong for the local scene. The Zauber beers don't come off as world class, but they are very quaffable and I hope to see them expand and improve on their horizons.

 

Myopic Red is a German Alt beer. Had a pint 9/7/12 - plastic cup on draft at Friday Night Live (food truck/Beer/DJ) event at Zauber Brewing Company in Grandview.

A: Red to brown. Clear. Good head retention to finish! Typical Alt apperance and slight over carbonation.
S: Bready character with hint of carmel.
T: Biscuity with slight carmelly melting through the background. Strong bitter backbone - but balanced with malty undertone. Clean finish attenuates nicely with slight bitter back throat.
M: Smooth mouthfeel. Easy to drink. Medium body with spright carbonation.
O: I want to tail-gate with this beer, beer style. Not heavy, not over-the-top, just a nice clean very drinkable beer. The malty and bitter character of this beer is strong enough to quench the tail-gate fantacy. Plus, its head retention is nice. The big plus, is that I could drink this all day and not feel like a whale.
To appreciate the Alt beer catagory, you must love the old german style of beer. This beer is an Ale but Lagered to condition. It reminds me of the beer they must have drank in the old world before travling to the new world. Whenever i have a good Alt, I alway feel like Im drinking a beer with a distant relative. Now, i want another...

On tap in a pint glass at Woodlands Tavern on 5/16/12

The appearance is a very cloudy, stained wood brown. One thumb of smooth foam drops by half after a minute or two.

The aroma is timid and watery with notes of caramel, bread, floral hops and some herbal hops. It has a plastic scent to it. Ewh, the flavor is full of bad tidings. A thin, watery feel belies the weak caramel and floral tones. The finish is where it really bombs - dirty tea leaves, bark and paper. Myopic Red tries to be bitter, but just comes off as resentful. At least the carbonation doesn't seem too harsh; too little, too late if you ask me.

This beer is so bad, it's difficult to drink with a straight face. I wish I could laugh, but the appropriate response is more along the lines of "cringe," and I'm not talking about Tommy. This is a chore to drink. Please tell me what the hep-cats on the Underground see in this.
