With West Sixth brewers tinkering with stronger imperial beer and their heavy hop flirtations, it seems that no style is off limits. Even the German lager gets with facelift with a few East Sixth twists.
Cast with a faint veil, the golden lager takes on a mild "keller" character, pulling a sheet of froth to the rim. Bold wafts of grassy, herbal, floral and and spicy botanicals grab the senses and pull you into the glass. Soft cracker-like maltiness is mild with grain sweetness and really propel the hops forward.
Rounding upon the palate, its soft bread textures dissolve with ease and those hop flavors begin to pop, resting on zest of piquant carbonation. Dainty floral honeysuckle begins to morph into elements of sassafras, tea, fresh pine shavings and a pop of pepper to close. With a gently rolling undertow of lemon zest, apple peel and melon, a rise of faint sulfur provides a mouthfeel with a touch of grit.
Clean, crisp and dry in finish, the beer's earthy, pepper and grassy bite accompanies the fresh wood bitterness and reinforces the character of tea, fresh tobacco and with an echo of honey late in taste.
