Just in time for the madness of March in the bluegrass region, the brewers of West Sixth quenches central Kentucky's thirst with a seasonal libation of high drinkability, that's effortless on the palate yet has a good degree of culinary delight.

Marzen Madness is Germany's and Austria's amber beer, deep in copper and bronzen hues to shed a cottony off-white swath of foam. Its gently rolling aromatics tease the nose with faint caramel, nutty, toasty elegance. As taste does similarly, its malty-sweet tilt seems soft of honey, caramelized grain, and hints of "Cracker Jacks" ballpark treats.

With its firm, bready and toasty body held in check, the sweetness weakens just enough to allow the charm of noble German hops to offset just enough of the malt sweetness to give the most slender sense of balance with their floral, herbal taste and mildly spiced bitterness.

The medium-light beer carries a greater degree of weight and lingering sweetness than more authentic versions, yet its minty-cool finish refreshes the palate as the waning sips continue to side decidedly with the caramel malts.

Proper color, though lacks head retention.

Aroma is toasted malt and light specialty grain fruitiness. Very grainy, with a touch of floral hop.

Flavor is on the sweet side, lots of toasted bread throughout, but I'm picking up an off character. It starts slightly metallic, picks up on that fruitiness, then gets a little sour. I like the malt character, but could use better attenuation, and losing that sour note. I'm guessing the yeast had some fermentation issues.
