Brewed fresh for the Cinco de Mayo festivities, the West Sixth beer makers take the adventurous sour ale in the direction of margarita and then turn on the charm with copious amounts of passionfruit for an extra tropical flare.
Aptly named Passionfruit Margarita, the sour ale pours with a slight peach hue on a golden straw base hue. As a spritzy froth rises, it falls in a sparkling wine behavior. Tantalizing aromas of passionfruit, cider, white wine, and citrus greet the nose with those tropical notes resonating soundly. Light sweetness of saltwater taffy, hard candy and crisp wafer decorates the early palate with a tepid malt sweetness.
And that sweetness bounces from the palate effortlessly as the fruit flavors build upon the middle palate. A burst of passionfruit floods the tastebuds with a supportive sourness rounding the taste with lemon, lime, crabapple, white grape, honeydew and gooseberry. A mild salinity comes through on the late palate and gives a rounded taste and texture to the sourness along with highlighting its brief after palate of sourdough.
Light, crisp, clean and highly refreshing, the flavors come together seamlessly and fall from the palate with hardly a mention of aftertaste. A gentle tequila spice teases the throat with hints of cashew and oak resonating gently on the finish.
