It might be "the most wonderful time of the year", but we can't help from having our sour moods every now and again. The keen brewers at West Sixth understands this and builds a beer for just those moments.
Caught somewhere between gingerbread and oude bruin, Sour Xmas pours a rusty, tawny dark brown with ribbons of mahogany shining through. Underneath a slim foamy sheet lies a cherry, berry and twangy scent piled on a toasty, spicy and caramelized sweet scent. Molasses, sorghum, toast and coffee come to life on the early palate for a brief moment.
As the sweetness subsides, the sourness along with the fruit impressions of cider, wine, stone fruit and tart berries slide over the impressions of toast, coffee and cocoa for a toasty tartness on the middle palate. Spices of cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg come in with a woodsy brunt to balance the sweetness and fruitiness with a weathered oak taste and texture to close
Medium bodied, the tartness of the beer cuts through the malt and dries the beer into a woodsy, earthy and peppery finish with an extension of brandy warmth and Christmas spices into a medium long aftertaste
