Wanting badly to be a sangria but also wanting to be an IPA, the West Sixth brewers have their hands full trying to wrangle this wild and wily, fruitcentric ale.
Chocked with copious amounts of vine ripened berries, Very Berry Citra Gose soon fills the nose with the tangy succulence of blueberry, blackberry and raspberry along with herbal citrus notes and a rounded brininess of sea air. Held within its hazy ruby coat likes a taffy-like sweetness with hints of hard candy that tease the early tastebuds with fruit juices, agave and a hint of sourdough.
As the middle palate becomes awash with the berry juiciness, a more racy taste of tangerine offers a brightness and a zip of tartness that leads into a botanical grassiness laced with chive, verbena and hemp. Trending both sour and bitter, the togetherness of these palate sensations suggest ruby red grapefruit flavor. Tea-like with a hint of gin, the finish is gently sprucy with a medium short linger of fruit skins and seed spiciness.
Medium light in body, the tart and moderately bitter beer offers a drying palate to contend with the juice sweetness while the creaminess of wheat is a buffer for the minty alcohol spice. Trying hard to become a sangria, hints of white wine shine through the Citra hops and the fruit additions for a cidery, vinous session throughout.
