Whoever thought that country western flavors could include such briny, oniony, sour flavors. Not many of us, that's for sure, but when the minds of Country Boy and West Sixth breweries get together, the west just gets a little wilder.
Volume 11 of their annual Lexington Beer Week series celebrates a German-styled Gose, pouring pale gold and caught in a yeasty, wheaten haze. With a tall foam building on the nose so does the scent of sautéing onion, chive, ramps and leeks. Highly vegetal with a twinge of sourdough and musty citrusy tang, the nose is a curious blend for sure. Sweeter in its early flavors, the doughy wheat flavors are lightly biscuity with sourdough and saltwater taffy.
The middle palate swirls with a slowly receding sweetness and growing tartness for a sweet and sour interplay. With rising flavors of lime, lemon and white grape rising, a cidery, winey taste adds a brightness to the middle palate before a deep and briny taste of sea water washes the late palate with brine, mollusk and wheat germ.
In full appreciation of the gose type of sour wheat ale, the brewers know the keen differences between this historic style and other more general kettle soured ale, this collaboration ale has a pin-point level of acidity and an acurate mouthfeel, albeit with the pungency of brine and shallot distracting from flavor. A full and pillowy aftertaste of sourdough keeps the authenticity alive if you can get past their creative juices.
