This is an unlikely seasonal offering from the Backcountry Brewery folks, who in recent years, have stuck to more traditional styles for their winter releases.
Their "Weissbock" is on the lighter end of the weizenbock spectrum, amber in color with a thin head and a ripe bouquet, filled with clove and banana aromas. There is also a faint, slightly disturbing, bit of glue aroma at work here.
The flavor is a mix of dark breads, yeasty-phenolic flavors, and a hint of alcohol. I wish the mouthfeel were more full all the way through, as the thickness that starts at the beginning of each swig eventually gives way to a bitter, dry finish. Nonetheless, at 6.75% ABV this is a strong beer but an easy-to-drink weizenbock. It's a great winter style that makes for a great restorative at the end of a "hard" day on the slopes.
Overall, this is easily one of the Backountry Brewery's best beers--full bodied, balanced, and nearly spot-on with style. Cross your fingers that they've got it on tap next time you happen through Frisco.
