Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, smoke, and chipotle pepper aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly tart char, cocoa powder, and chipotle pepper flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and chile heat on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with a great aroma, but there is a slight tartness present that makes me think there is an infection issue developing in this one.
