IMHO a very good brewery. I get them only by mail order because no distro to east coast. The description on this page does not mention that it was aged n wine barrels.
A carmel, buttery wheat wine with dry Pinot Noir notes. No cloying sweetness that sometimes plague these big wheat ales.. Just sublime balance from this dark orange elixir with ruby highlights. Very good if you like the style. Mouth feel is spot on: wide yet perky and not cumbersome. A wheaty, zesty spin on barley wine without the hops. I am very intrigued by the affinity of this WW to red wine barrel aging. Masterfully executed.
More love for Rough Draft: Their best brew I've tried is BA Freudian Slip , an American strong ale in bourbon barrels is a lot like the new bourbon barrel bastard by Stone. The Rough Draft version came out first, is stronger in ABV, and a bit better.

The strongest and maybe the best Wheat Wine I've tried. So boozy, but the wine flavor comes through in an interesting way. Not so woody, and not sour at all, but the intensity of it is something to experience. Attractive coppery color though not too carbonated.
Starts out sweet with a long malty taste that heats up the mouth. Burnt sugar, loads of caramel, and a touch of cedar. Flavors of carrot cake, and a distinct dry Sherry finish. Deeply fragrant, again like Sherry. Another reason to try Rough Draft brews. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in Normal Heights.

Monogram stamped red wax capped 22oz bottle from j47paco (thanks so much!). No identifiable bottling date but I believe this is a recent release. Served in a goblet.
Pours a clear, brilliant crimson chestnut with a finger and a half ecrue foam. A healthy collar remains along with some wispy islands, leaving scattered lacing.
Vibrant aromas of sweet oak, wheat malt, berries, wine and vanilla. Outstanding.
I was not expecting the initial strong kick of booze. Once that hot smoke of alcohol clears there are some really nice flavors going on. Grainy wheat, caramel, white grape skins, sweet earthy oak and a hint of strawberry, all wrapped up in that heavy blanket of alcohol. The booze heat subsides a bit as it warms, allowing more caramel and grainy sweetness. I detect more woodsy barrel than wine/ pinot but the flavors work quite well together.
Smooth, oily, full body with assertive carbonation and some cooling alcohol. Finishes with rich, sweet notes of caramel, toast, wheat grain and wet oak.
Rough Draft's Wheat Wine Ale may run a bit hot but it is quite delicious. The barrel adds some soft edges and additional sweetness to the hot, grainy base. This is a good one to try for fans of the style because pinot barrels add a much different element than the more common bourbon barrel.
