Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is a beer with a story, entered in the Brew NZ Awards under festive brew and was awarded bronze. This beer was brewed to celebrate the 12 years that Christina and I have been together for. 1% of abv to represent each year...problem is, I didn't do my sums right, and we only ended up with 11% ABV. It's a "Black Forest Stout" meaning I have used an imperial chocolaty nature of a stout for the chocolate end of the Black forest... and then there is the 15 grams per liter of Sour Morello cherries to add their character. I also used coconut nectar as a fermentable and to add some slickness to the palate. The beer symbolizes Mine and Christina’s relationship. We both spent a lot of our youth at Muriwai, which is depicted in the label. The artwork came of an art teacher we both had at College. We met each other at this college 12 years ago, and ended up getting married. Now we own a brewery together making special beers with fuckloads of booze and interesting flavours in them! On a side note, this is the Ladies Beer I was talking about all those months ago. My entire point was that it not what's in the bottle that makes it a ladies beer. It's the
sentiment. The imagery... that marketing etc. Who would have thought that an 11% ABV imperial stout would count as a ladies beer?

Thanks to Cellarbrations Carlisle for this one and also thanks to Spicelab for the notes as on my bottle it only has the front label with the picture mentioned and i didnt get any of those notes and the only thing i knew about this was that it was a RIS anyway it pours a dark kola hue with a cherry background with a khaki two finger head that stays and leaves nice lacing everywhere, the smell is chocolate coated cherries, coconut, boozy alcohol, marshmellows, mocha and a slight herbalness but apart from that pretty much just like a Cherry Ripe, the mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation and has tastes of dark rich chocolate,a hint of burnt wood, molasses, irish coffee,a touch of booze and finshed with a chocolate coated cherry sour sweetness and overall not bad and not your everyday RIS cheers.

750mL bottle purchased from Beervana. Shared with MrKennedy and mulder1010. Reviewed from notes.

Deep chocolate brown, not RIS dark, with a moderately dense saffron head that persists before eventually leaving a strong lace curtain.

First impressions are palpably dry, contributed by burnt tyres, tar, plasticy phenolics, with just a mild floral edge. Over time, an enticing cherry-ripe character creeps and builds.

Chocolate, dry char, wholemeal toast and variable levels of cherry-ripe.

For 11% it's not overly thick, but nice and velvety. Demure, but just sufficient carbonation.

Half-expecting a train-wreck, but this is well approachable. If anything, the only flaw is that it lacks the cojones and brooding personality of the best RISs. Would potentially improve with age.
