"Dagoba Organic Xocolatl Chocolate, with hints of cayenne and cinnamon, was added to the kettle. This stout has a rich smoothness and velvety testure with a spicy finish."
The bartender said this was a new batch but he thinks it's 6-7%...so I'll go with 6.5!
1/2 pint served in a small shaker at the brewery, the Xocolatl Oatmeal Stout is a dark reddish brown with a tight, creamy khaki head that's long lasting and leaves thick, foamy lace. Great head, weak color.
Smell is on the lighter side, toasted malt, chiles and dusty coco. The pepper certainly is not average, but otherwise, eh...
Taste is thinner dark malt flavors, dry and spicy. Not as rich or chocolaty as I was expecting, it tastes a lot more like a chile milk stout, though the heat is fairly well integrated and restrained.
Mouthfeel is very smooth and velvety, I agree with them there, but the body is pushing watery.
Drinkability is average, I was hoping for a much richer chocolate stout - the maple syrup color was my first red flag. Still, it went down very easily, as it's well made and very smooth, if not quite my style. If this really was 6-7% I'd be shocked, I'm guess closer to 4.5-5. Overall, this was pretty uninspiring, but I have to give them credit for pushing the boundries...
