i was surprised to see a baltic porter on the menu here, easily the most interesting brew on their list when i was in, this was among browns and reds and pales and a lot of pretty standard stuff, so i was immediately drawn to it. its lively from the tap but a little lighter than i am used to seeing in the style, not quite brown, but lighter than black for sure, see through in the right light. the aroma and flavor are nice though, a sort of rustic yeast, lager-esque, and doing its best to crisp up the higher than normal caramel malts in the middle of this thing, nutty and earthy though, roasted but not bitter, and with nuances of unbrewed coffee grounds, bakers chocolate, and tobacco, its got plenty going on for being quite simple at the same time. the body is a little light for me, and so is the alcohol, i am used to these being quite a bit more substantial on both counts, and it seems missing to me, but i like the flavors that have been established and the clean finish. well made beer, perhaps a little safe, but its always good to see a baltic porter on a menu!
