When the brewing community fails to deliver the variety of ale that craft beer drinkers deserve, the distributors take the reigns. Teaming up with Altered Craft Distributors, the brewers of Troubled Waters get out of the haze and deliver on the black.
Altered Waters comes with a genuinely coffee-black pour while topped with a foamy tan froth. With the sharper scent of citrus, coffee, cocoa, herb and hay decorating the nose, the first sip is a sultry sweet taste of dark chocolate, nougat and a hint of caramel.
As the black IPA rolls along the middle palate, the sweetness drifts and the hop flavors of white grapefruit, orange and pineapple step into the spotlight. But with the charred edges of coffee, campfire and cocoa still present, the citrus takes on the grilled, seared and almost smoky presence. Bitter to close, the impressions of coffee and cocoa linger into a brushfire bitterness and an earthen roast finish.
Medium-full in body, the black IPA finishes malty-dry with a tilt toward the side of bitterness for an edgier, drier and hoppier version of American porter.
