A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of May 2012, so it's a little out of date. Bought cheap just the other day from a B&M store, so I can't complain. Named after the Order of the Garter (founded in 1344); the label features the English motto and coat of arms.
Poured into a straight pint glass. A clear golden hue with high carbonation - could be mistaken for a fizzy lager. Forms a decent head of white foam that subsides rapidly to nothing. Aroma of faint caramel malt with stewed hops, hints of fruity ale yeast and a butterscotch character. A stale note in the background.
Tastes of mild caramel malt with a dry finish. Notes of butterscotch, stewed hops, cardboard and ale yeast. A stale character pervades the flavour. Mild bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, but watery and thin. Rather astringent - dries the palate. Aftertaste of stale stewed hops and cardboard.
Bleh - none too good. I suppose it's age will have had a negative impact, and I doubt the clear bottle helped. Weak, bland flavour with too much stewed hop character and no depth. The staleness doesn't improve things. I reckon this doesn't have much going for it even when fresh. Avoid.
