The only way to know if experimental hops are good is to use them. The problem is, once brewers know they're good everyone wants them, and you can no longer get them. This year we discovered that hop X13459 is awesome. So, we got some for you to enjoy.

Not quite what I expected, it has a medium head and an orangey/copper color. Aroma is slight bready and tropical fruit. It has a slightly sweet start with tropical hops and tapers off to a slight bite of hops. It is almost dank, but not quite. It is an interesting beer, not bad but not great either. Rated 6-6-2021

Pours a honey gold with a finger of foamy head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring with some lacing. Aroma mostly pine. Taste follows nose. Seems a bit under carbonated...

Ever had the "Air, Land, and Sea Burger" from the secret McDonald's menu? Don't worry, this beer is not as ambitious.
I was surprised when the colour changed as I poured. It started out as a honey colour and I was ready to make a connection between that and the bear on the cover, but then it turned darker, as if the honey was consumed by the bear. The overall flavour is very inoffensive for a Pale Ale and I expected a stronger battle of nature's forces. Maybe that's the catch 23 the name implies? It was a smooth drink, however it fell into the trap of the cover art being more interesting than the beer itself.
To me, the cover art depicts an enormous battle in Jewish mythology. The bear is the mighty Behemoth, and the shark represents the Leviathan. Both are fighting for dominance, until the United States of America plunges in like a mighty eagle, bombs their homes, and leaves without realizing the similarities of their form of international warfare and terrorism.

Amber gold with a thin head. Retention is decent, and upon break you are left with the tiniest cap and collar. Nice lacing visible.

Smell is malt driven, caramel sweet malts dominate, then give way to a remarkably floral hops scent, melony and fruit blossoms. Finally I think I am picking up some honey smells that blend with the other sweet aspects.

Flavor is the high point of this beer. Again the malts are up front and providing a strong lead. Then I get some lovely melon and fruity hops. I find the honey flavor there too.

Feel is nice, about a middleweight and the carbonation is medium-low. The finish is fruity and slightly bitter, and I would have to call it a little coating like.

A nice beer, with flavor winning the day. There are some aspects that don't seem to be exactly in line with a pale ale. For example, the color seems a little dark. Otherwise this is a great beer. An easy drink, I would happily have another.

Hazy, deep orange, thin bubbly head with streak lacing. Aroma is lemon and herbal notes with hints of caramel malt. The flavor is citrus and honey with hops oil and herbs. Green tea and floral qualities as well. Not your typical pale ale. Worth trying, glad they brought it out of retirement.

Bought 22oz bottle from Foodland $6.88
Amber color
Light carbonation
Medium-light mouthfeel
Taste seems empty, Some sour bitterness and that's about it.
Overall not a beer I would drink again.

Attractive dark amber brew, a little hazy, with a pile of coarse foam in the small nonic. This has that leafy, herbal taste of fresh hops so beloved of the Oregon brewers. Green tea with less intense bitterness, just a whiff of magnolia flowers with that not quite sweet lemony fragrance.

A touch of honey along with the modest bitterness. Malty and tangy, with just a touch of sweetness. The vegetable flavor lingers long. Very sudsy and pleasant drinking, though. Light body. A whiff of orange peel.

Pours a murky dark honey orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, earth, pepper, and slight citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with earth, pepper, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop and earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer with really subdued aromas and flavors that make this one fairly boring.

Serving type: bottle.

Gigantic Brewing Catch 23 Experimental Pale Ale
serving type: wine galss, bomber from Tamura's, Honolulu, HI ( Jul 2015)

A: Medium to dark amber

S: Fruity hops with some pineapple presence. A bit of lemon and dish soap also.

T: Amplification of the nose with a lot more fruit. Really nice crystal malt comes out in a light caramel sweetness. A bit of dish soap rounds out the sweetness pleasantly. Hints of lemon and citrus pop up too.

M: Outstanding. Goes down smooth and ends creamy, pretty much chewy.

O: Fantastic. I might reach for this over Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale. Enough said.

Appearance - Pours a golden amber with two fingers of bubbly cream coloured head.

Smell - floral piney and citrus hops, bready malts, orange, lemon, hint of white pepper.

Taste - Floral piney and citrus hops followed by the orange, lemon, and hint of white pepper. The bready malts help to balance the brew out.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes on the sweet side.

Overall - An enjoyable APA. The hops aren't as elevated as I would prefer but still an enjoyable brew nonetheless.

Drank it right out the 22oz(heathen, I know) so didn't really get a look. Am I the only one who smelled white pepper? Anyway, pretty solid.
