Black beer with a large frothy, rocky beige head. Very attractive

Substantial piney, grapefruit aromas..burnt oat malt backing.

Taste similar to the aroma..but very nice burnt smooth tastes..sounds bad but its good..

Excellent palate..smooth and creamy

Very nice beer but what category this is not a schwarzbier..its not a CDA since it is a lager.

Cascadian Imperial Dark Lager?

i have loved pretty much all the dark stuff i have had from these guys, and this is one of their best. not enough good schwarzbiers being made on american turf right now, always stoked to see a new one. looks like a robust porter in the glass, nearly black in color, not quite as viscous, and holding an inch of dark brown head in the pint glass. it smells heavy roasted, notes of black coffee in there with even a hint of smoke, very dark aromatic complexion, but a little lighter in the flavor and feel. less coffee in the taste, instead its the darkest roast of barley, malted though, and smooth. fire char but not smoke here, bitter, and with a decidedly german tasting yeast strain to it, pretty classic on that front, if a bit more intense on the grains than the old world examples of the style. smooth but slightly thin in feel, about what you would expect for the style, moderate carbonation feels just about right. nice depth on the malts here, something is different about it though, distinct, maybe a pinch of a midnight rye malt or something, maybe dark wheat, it seems slightly more unique on the grain side of things than i am used to. overall an awesome beer from these guys, who keep coming with delicious flavors at affordable prices. i am fully a fan now!

Tasted in a Spiegelau lager glass from a 22 oz bottle on April 17, 2016. Look is dark brown with a tan head and some lingering lacing. Smell is dark bitter cocoa, bitter citrus, fresh cut pine and dark roasted malt aromas. Taste is dark chocolate, citrus, pine resin and dark roasted malt flavors. Feel is medium in body with a smooth mouth feel and a creamy finish.

On tap at Brewbot, Belfast.
Jet with crusty white froth. 4
Spinach and ash nose. 3.75
Char, clean cracker, meat juice then vegetal, herbal, and dank hops. 4
Resiny finish and charcoal linger.
Almost medium, crisp, dry. 4

Has the super-dry, almost astringent end of a schwarz - keep this from being just a CDA. At the same time, harsh and stewy. Flawed design - just too burnt! 3.5

L- bottled, poured into a 12oz tulip, looks super dark brown/ black, half finger tan head settles down into a lingering lace along the sides and middle.
S- bitter chocolate, tons of cascade/ bittering hops, rounds out with a complex malty roastiness. Pretty subtle overall.
T- initially comes up front with cascade and a lovely dankness/ piney sensation, quickly smooths out into crisp bitter chocolate and finishes with an interesting maltiness and roast.
F- intriguing feel to this beer with the combination of the hop additions + lots of malt+ lagering; crisp, substantial body, and smooth all at the same time.
O- overall a pleasure to enjoy this brew, would buy again, excellent take on lager style with regional style, love gigantic.
