As fresh hop season draws down to a close, I guess it was inevitable that I'd run into one or two beers that I wouldn't like, but I was praying it wouldn't be this one.
Oddly, my previous encounters with Gigantic have all been in Tokyo, where the brewery enjoys an eclectic, yet cult following. I first tried Gigantic's flagship IPA, admittedly because I found the label design unique, at Hatos Bar some years back and remembered enjoying it; earlier this year I also had the opportunity of trying KAGAMI-BIRAKI, their collaboration NEIPA collaboration with Shiga Kōgen, and absolutely fell in love with it, which highlighted the brewery as an eventual must-visit location once I'd settled down in Oregon.
Whereas the indications were all there--a fresh hop single-hop Simcoe pale ale--I desperately wanted to like this beer so that I'd finally have a better excuse to make the trek down to their awkward location in SE Portland. Unless they still have KAGAMI-BIRAKI on tap, it doesn't look like I'll be making that trek any time soon.
The aroma and the flavor of the beer are single-dimensional in composition; this almost tastes like a SMaSH ale with a clean fermentation profile. The brew smells mostly of dull lemon-y citrus while the sensation of the tongue is composed primarily of mild earthy notes.
These notes gradually start counter-opposing each other with the passage of time, but fails to commingle or intersect in any significant way or fashion. There is a very dilute reminder that malt was involved in the brewing process for this beer in a very pale saltine-cracker like notion upon the tongue; otherwise this is a rather lackluster showcase of fresh wet Simcoe hops, which almost drinks like a lager in its simplicity.
Medium-light bodied, gravitating significantly towards light. Medium carbonation with a crisp, clean, and somewhat refreshing mouthfeel which is probably the highlight of this beer.
I would have liked this better if it were also creamy. And had a richer aroma and flavor. And maybe sold in 12oz format.

Pale, peach-like body; mildly cloudy; thick, rocky head. Some faded, spicy hop notes on the nose. Mild flavors all around; some light estery qualities; hop bitterness starts slowly yet builds to a satisfying finish. There is some bite to the mouthfeel yet it feels rather watery, too; mostly dry finish.
I probably poured this one past its prime. It is okay yet lacks depth and unique character.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very slightly hazy coppery amber with a fine two finger white head with great retention and thick lacing, great for a pale ale. Aroma of pale malt, citrus and dank hops that are slightly spicy like a winter warmer, lemon citrus and a hint of pine. Flavor is neutral pale malt, citrus hops, lemon, grapefruit and yuzu citrus, mild light stone fruit. Finishes with lemon and grapefruit citrus with moderat hop bitterness and a similar light yuzu note that lingers. Medium bodied with slight creaminess. A nice presentation of the Simcoe hop citrus flavors, with a little less mixed fruit than I expected. The flavors are subtle and fresh as expected from a fresh hop, although leaning very much towards lemon and lighter varieties of orange like yuzu. I've not tried the earlier incarnations of this apparently annual fresh hop, but I will watch for it next year.
