Color is dark brown. It actually seems clear at the very edges, yet it's definitely fully opaque at about a half inch. In spite of a accidentally vigorous pour, there's minimal head and lacing. So, the appearance is plain.
The smell is not. Most of the time when bourbon is in somebody else's description, I have to strain to get it. Not here. It's even got some flavor depth, like an oaky Woodford Reserve. But it's still a dark brew, and there's a good amount of caramel and vanilla. Dark fruit, too, especially dates. With that vanilla and a little lactic element, I wonder if this is sorta what a date shake tastes like. (I just have to find the right place when I'm in Palm Springs again.)
The dates are pretty heavy in the flavor, and right there along side them are smoky prunes. Those hit first, then back comes the bourbon. Moderate sweetness, in spite of the associated flavors. And there's quite a bit more charcoal in the taste than on the nose. Too big a swig and it can come across as acrid.
It works best as a sipper, even though it's medium weight for the type. Mostly dates, prunes, and charcoal in the aftertaste. There's a bit of a bite that I'm not sure is spiciness or alcohol, but overall the latter doesn't dominate anything.
it occupies a pleasant middle ground between bourbons and stouts, and I always assumed those would clash at least a little.
