Smokin’ George is a rich, velvety Smoked Porter brewed in collaboration with our friends at Moor Beer Company (Bristol, UK). It features deep notes of roasted malt, smooth chocolate, and espresso, complemented by warming hints of smoke and campfire. Brewed with house-smoked malt from our friends at Hi/Fi BBQ (Alexandria, VA), it’s infused with a distinctive, savory depth from a blend of hickory and cherrywood smoke.

20 oz draft pour at the brewery, served in a seidel glass (my request in lieu of a nonic pint glass). Appearance is dark brown with a tan head. A smoked porter sounded good to me, and this beer did not disappoint: roasty malt, cocoa, pumpernickel, molasses, and earthy hops melded with the smoked character (bonfire) and a hint of chocolate-covered cherry just perfectly. Mouthfeel was moderately carbonated and full-bodied. Very drinkable at an approachable abv. Great stuff.

A nice tan head atop the black body. The foamy part falls fairly quickly, the remnants of the head form a nice sheet of lace, at least at first. Smoke notes in the nose have a backyard grill kinda vibe. The roasty malt seems to be taming the smoke notes a bit, but they come through as a nice accent to the base beer.

On the taste, the porter is first and foremost. It has a bit of sweetness, which may be filling out the feel a bit, as it is mildly rich for 6%. It's really tasty, although the smoke all but disappears moving from the nose to the taste. It sneaks in the late part of each sip, with a slightly acrid bitterness. It trickles in a little more as it warms, but it comes with a somewhat ashy vibe at that point.

So, for a smoked beer - it has a decent aroma, but comes as mostly lacking on the palate, for me. As a porter, I am quite enjoying the rich, malty, and bitter mix in the makeup.
