Belgian Stout brewed for GABS Festival in Melbourne, May 2014. In my notes I have it called 'Rastapopoulos' although the official programme just has Belgian Stout. Either it was labelled that on the festival bar menus, or I made it up.
Pours a very black colour with tan head that looks like it's full of light silty sediment. Retains a nice medium crown. Nice colour indeed for a stout.
Smells big and bitter and roasty. Robust chocolate notes with a touch of Belgian phenolic character lingering at the back. Nice character and true to the brief.
Taste is a bit lighter. Big caramel character to the malt here that does develop roasty character midway but doesn't quite reach the bowels that the nose suggested it might. Slight spice note with a touch of licorice and maybe a whisper of espresso. No sign of that Belgian character but it's pretty nice anyway.
Nice body, quite smooth with a bit of texture from the roasty spicy character to keep it interesting.
Nice stout, could use a little more oomph though given the brief. To borrow a phrase from my review of Bright's "Battle of the Bulge", needs more Belgium.
